Peatlands are not problem areas. They are climate treasures. We show you how your peatland can become land with a future –
economically viable, ecologically sound and funded.
Paludiculture with Peatlands for Prosperity: making peatlands valuable again
OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH GREEN RESTORATION IRELAND (GRI)

“We work closely with GRI to revive peatlands in Germany and the Netherlands too and make them effective for the climate – with new, profitable uses for farmers.”
The Green Restoration Ireland Cooperative Society (GRI) is Europe’s pioneer in paludiculture and peatland rewetting. As an official project partner of the EU Just Transition Initiative, GRI implemented the Peatlands for Prosperity model project in Ireland – and together with GRI we are now bringing this successful model to Central Europe.

What is paludiculture?
Paludiculture is the agricultural use of wet or rewetted peat soils – with species that love water and store CO₂ at the same time.

These include, for example:
- Reed (for construction, packaging, paper)
- Cattail (insulation, fibres)
- Peat moss (peat substitutes)
- Blueberries, medicinal plants, wet meadows
- Biochar (carbon sinks) from the biomass of these areas

WHAT YOU CAN DO AS A FARMER
- Plan rewetting → together with experts & GRI
- Set up a pilot area → GRI supplies seed, know-how & analysis
- Generate carbon credits → via tgo Carbon
- Use funding & establish new products → e.g. biochar, natural building materials, sustainable textiles
- Become part of an EU pioneer network → with real working farms and measurable impact
Benefits for your farm
✅ Around 15–30 t CO₂e savings per ha & year (drained grassland emits approx. 32 t, cropland approx. 40 t)
✅ Eligible for funding from EU programmes & climate funds
✅ Stable carbon credits (MRV + verifiable)
✅ Promote biodiversity & stabilise the water balance
✅ New income from products and credits
