EU GREEN WEEK
BRUSSELS

Two intensive and inspiring days in Brussels have come to an end. As CEO of tgo AG and a consortium partner in the Interreg North-West Europe project Smart Carbon Farming, I had the privilege of taking part in EU Green Week 2026 — the European Commission’s flagship environmental conference, now in its 26th edition — engaging with leading voices from policy, finance, science, agriculture, industry, biodiversity and climate.
What stood out most was a clear shift in the conversation. A few years ago, the discussion was about whether concepts such as carbon farming, nature credits, biodiversity credits and regenerative agriculture could work. Today the question is sharper: how do we scale them fast enough to meet Europe’s climate, biodiversity and resilience goals? Put differently — we no longer have a knowledge problem. We have an implementation problem.

This year’s theme captured the challenge perfectly. Europe has no shortage of strategies, frameworks, scientific evidence or political ambition. What we need now is implementation. Across sessions — from “Show Me the Money” to “Nature Credits”, “Soil: Fertile Ground for Innovation” and “Farming with Nature” — one message kept returning: nature must become part of economic decision-making. Not as a cost. Not as a compliance exercise. But as a measurable asset that creates resilience, productivity and long-term value.

AGRITECHNICA
HANNOVER MESSE

Is carbon farming the future of sustainable agriculture? We put this question to farmers from all over the world at AGRITECHNICA , the world’s largest agricultural trade fair. For a whole week we were at the HANNOVER MESSE. What stood out: the topic is very much alive, above all among younger farmers. Interest among the Dutch was very muted; Argentinians, Brazilians and Germans, however, were curious. What does it actually mean? How much does it pay? And what guarantees can be offered?
Carbon farming is a method of land management in which farmers deliberately apply practices to bind more carbon (CO₂) from the atmosphere in soil and biomass – for example through reduced tillage, growing cover crops or agroforestry. The aim: to combat climate change and, often, to generate additional income through carbon credits.
At tgo AG, together with our partners, we have developed a complete starter package: sustainable measures, hardware, software, certification and financing. We combine agroforestry with, among other things, biochar, wildflower meadows, humus build-up and the sale of heat. The CO₂ removed from the air on a net basis is certified by us, and our bank buys these certificates for itself and its customers. An additional business model – not suitable for every farmer, but for a growing group where the conditions are right.
It was an intense week: more than 470,000 visitors came to the fair, which led to countless conversations. Of course, there were also critical voices about political instability and day-to-day prices. By analysing the specific situation of each individual farm, we can calculate whether carbon farming is also financially attractive.
We would like to warmly thank the team at Vogelsang GmbH & Co. KG for providing the stand space and for their excellent support!

CO2 TREASURE
ARTLAND

It was a special day – together we experienced the success of a bold beginning: the first tonne of biochar was produced! Visible proof that our system of agroforestry, pyrolysis and biodiversity works – and you were part of this milestone.

In recognition of Ingo Zapp’s courage in being the first to start this project – despite all the uncertainties and genuine pioneering work – tgo AG values this achievement at €880 per tonne of sequestered CO₂ equivalent.

In doing so, we honour a commitment that shows how genuine, measurable climate protection can work. The basis is the current damage cost rate for the next generation according to the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) – a benchmark for the real value of every avoided emission.

SMART
CARBON FARMING

Organiser: Interreg North-West Europe

Venue: Belgium

Carbon farming rewards farmers that store carbon and/or reduce emissions, promoting healthier farming methods like regenerative agriculture that restore soil, rather than degrade it. The approach is key to achieving an economically resilient farming ecosystem in North West Europe and beyond.
