EU emissions trading, ETS 2 and CBAM: advice for companies
Certification, carbon trading and compliance
With tgo AG as your partner, you can navigate the complex requirements of the EU Emissions Trading System and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) with confidence. We help you identify savings potential, certify your emissions and optimise your carbon footprint. Our goal: minimise emissions, reduce costs, ensure compliance.
The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) are central instruments of the European Union for reducing CO₂ emissions and supporting companies on the path to climate-neutral business models. They aim to make emissions measurable, internalise the costs of pollution and create incentives for sustainable innovation.
tgo AG helps companies not only to meet the complex requirements of the EU Emissions Trading System and CBAM, but also to use them strategically in order to minimise emissions, reduce costs and remain competitive in the long term.

What is the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS)?
Who is affected?
What is the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)?
The EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is the European Union’s central climate protection instrument. It is based on the “cap and trade” principle:
- Cap
The EU sets an upper limit on total CO₂ emissions. This limit is reduced every year. - Trade
Companies receive emission allowances (EUAs), which they need to cover their CO₂ emissions. Surplus allowances can be traded.
Those affected are:
- Energy-intensive industries (e.g. cement, steel, chemicals).
- Energy suppliers.
- Aviation and shipping companies.
Goal: to reduce emissions without jeopardising competitiveness by making emission costs transparent and tradable.
CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) complements the EU ETS and has applied since October 2023. Its aim is to prevent “carbon leakage”, i.e. the relocation of emission-intensive production to countries without comparable carbon pricing.
How does CBAM work?
- Companies importing CO₂-intensive products (e.g. steel, cement, fertilisers) must purchase emission certificates.
- The certificates reflect the CO₂ costs that apply to comparable products in the EU.
Sectors affected:
- Steel, iron and aluminium.
- Fertilisers and cement.
- Electricity imports.
Goal: to prevent distortions of competition and drive forward global climate protection measures.
