Palu funding: your peatland is worth hard cash – and remains your land

The federal government pays you up to 90% of the land value as compensation, covers 100% of planning & implementation – and on top of that there is a +20% early-bird bonus. We at tgo AG support you from the very first question through to payout.

⏳ The +20% bonus applies to Module 3 applications submitted within one year of the guideline’s publication. We check the exact deadline with Rentenbank for you.

What is the Palu programme?

Drained peatland soils lose substance and value every year. That is why the federal government funds rewetting – voluntary, generously compensated and with a future for your farm.

Who is behind it?

The Federal Environment Ministry. Payments are made via the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank. Approved by the European Commission. Budget: €1.75 billion until the end of 2029.

What do you have to do?

Raise the water level on your peatland permanently (20 years). Advice, planning, permits and hydraulic engineering are 100% paid for – you bear no share of the costs.

What do you get?

A one-off payment of 80–90% of the standard land value as compensation + an annual income compensation for up to 7 years + a 70–80% grant for new “wet” income sources (paludiculture).

Plain talk for farmers

No. The land remains 100% your property. You only commit to keeping the water level high for 20 years – and you are compensated precisely for that.

Yes, entirely. There is no obligation to rewet. The programme is an offer – if you use it, you benefit; if you don’t, nothing happens.

The value compensation (Module 3.A) is paid as a one-off payment as soon as the raised water level has been verified by gauge for the first time (no later than 2 years after the start of the project). The income compensation (3.B) is paid annually.

As a rule, nothing: advisory services are 100% eligible for funding (up to €30,000 depending on the size of the land). The initial land check is always free of charge with us.

Yes – wet! Paludiculture such as reed, cattail (Typha), peat moss or water buffalo grazing is explicitly encouraged and funded at 70–80%. Leasing out the land or ceasing its use are also possible.

Peatland soils used for agriculture or forestry from approx. 5 ha (compensation even from 50 m² per plot). Whether your land qualifies is something we clarify in the free land check – a look at the peat soil map often helps.
